📍Burkina Faso

A few years ago, together with our partner, The Association for the Protection of Fauna and Flora, we had a distressing investigation at a zoo in Burkina Faso. The 112-hectare zoo was home to numerous endangered species, many of which were on the verge of death—hungry, weak, and exploited for profit at every stage of their lives. Our inspection uncovered a scene of horror as we realized the extent of neglect and suffering these animals endured.

They had given up hope and for some of them all help was too late.

But we didn`t give up and we are proud to say that the survivors of the Horror Zoo are now living peacefully in the Ziniaré Animal Sanctuary, and are receiving the care they deserve.

The rescue mission continued during extreme civil unrest times.

in January 2022, a coup d´état occurred in Burkina Faso. Gunfire erupted in the capital city of Ouagadougou and several military barracks were seized by soldiers. The president was reportedly detained at a military camp, and the military subsequently announced on television that he had been removed from power. They declared the dissolution of parliament, government, and constitution.

Despite this, we never left any animals behind. The unrest continued during 2023 with another coup and just recently in January 2024 another one happened.

With our help they gained back their healthy weight and their will to live.
