Yesterday, was World Chimpanzee Day, a moment to celebrate these incredible creatures and raise awareness about their plight. Chimpanzees, our closest living relatives, are facing numerous threats that have pushed them to the edge of extinction.

At Wild at Life e.V., we are dedicated to rescuing chimpanzees from critical situations. Many of these chimpanzees are taken from their natural habitats, their families torn apart, and sold for body parts or entertainment purposes. They endure unimaginable suffering in captivity, confined in small, dirty cages in zoos, safari parks, and laboratories. Their lives in such conditions are a huge contrast to the freedom and family bonds they would have in the wild.

In these pictures you can see Maiombe. She was very weak when we found her, torn from her home and family to be sold as a pet. We brought her to our sanctuary and began her healing process, providing medical and mental care, and helped her in every possible way at our rehab center before her integration with her own kind.

Our work through ongoing missions like “Mission Caita” has enabled the rescue of many chimpanzees, like Maiombe, giving them a secure place in sanctuaries, in which they can start their journey of healing and rediscover aspects of their natural lives. However, it’s important to remember that no sanctuary can truly replace the wild habitats and families they have lost.

We are actively fighting diseases in chimpanzees by regularly testing their feces for parasites and other illnesses. These diseases often spread when chimpanzees are poached from their natural habitats and kept in unsanitary conditions with humans. By monitoring and treating these health issues, we aim to protect the rescued chimpanzees and prevent the spread of those diseasess, ensuring a healthier future for them.

So, in honor of World Chimpanzee Day, let’s promise to keep fighting for these amazing animals!
